Color Mixing Tips for Painting

Mixing your own colors not only makes your piece more personal—it’s a great way to get that warm, rustic, hand-finished feel. Here are a few tips to help you confidently blend your acrylic paints:

🎨 Start with the Basics

You only need a few colors to create a whole palette. Primary colors (red, blue, yellow), plus black and white, can go a long way.

🧡 Warm It Up, Cool It Down

  • Warm tones (reds, oranges, yellows) bring energy and make your sign pop.

  • Cool tones (blues, greens, purples) feel calm and soothing.
Mixing warm and cool colors can create beautifully balanced, earthy tones perfect for rustic designs.

🪵 Rustic Neutrals = A Touch of Brown or Grey

Want that vintage, weathered vibe? Add a dab of brown or grey to any bright color to tone it down.

  • Example: Bright green + a touch of brown = sage green

  • Bold red + a bit of grey = rustic barn red

🌿 Pastels & Muted Shades

For soft, cozy tones:

  • Mix white into any color to create a pastel version.

  • Mix opposite colors (on the color wheel) to soften and mute them.

🧪 Test Before You Commit

Always mix a small amount on a palette or the backside of one of your pieces. Paint can dry darker than it looks when wet, especially on raw wood.

🖌️ Keep It Simple

Too many mixed colors can turn muddy fast. Stick to 2–3 colors at a time, and clean your brush between blends to keep colors fresh.

🧂 Bonus Tip: Add a Dash of Water

A tiny bit of water can help your paint blend more smoothly. For stain-like effects, thin the paint even more and brush it on lightly to let the wood grain show through.
